The Awards
Hypothesis Presentation Award: The difference between knowledge and understanding cannot be understated. This award goes to the team whose research and presentation best reflects a broad understanding of the various issues and scientific disciplines involved with the theme of this year's Challenge.
Team Spirit Award: Some teams really know how to go overboard. Their community knows them well. They're loud, they're bright, they jump around, and their high-fives really sting. They may rock the boat sometimes, but they always rock the house... This award goes to the team who most enthusiastically demonstrates a commitment to getting others to see how accessible, fun, and rewarding science and technology can be, especially when you're part of a great team.
Against All Odds Award: Incredible odds can be overcome if we just never give up, no matter what... This award goes to the team who rises from the worst situation to improvise, adapt, overcome, and still make a respectable showing.
Technical Interview Award: This award goes to the team best demonstrating their ability to understand and clearly communicate details of their robot's construction and mechanics, strategic design, program and other robot attributes.
Robust Design Award: The best mechanical designs make products that are consistent over time, and dependable under changing conditions (extremely important---think aircraft!) This award goes to the team whose robot most consistently and dependably works every time, uses parts and power efficiently, and rarely falls apart in service.
Programming Design Award: A program is to a robot like an education is to a human---each equips its owner to understand its situation and respond in a way that promotes success. This award goes to the team whose program most elegantly bridges the gap between robot hardware and team strategy.
Creativity Award: This award goes to the team best demonstrating their ability to think "out of the box", either in their Presentations or strategic plays on the field. Consideration is given to the most original approach to solving the Challenge missions either through their robot's design, construction or program.
Performance Award 2nd Place: The top two performing teams share the highest level of technical expertise. For achieving the second highest point total of all competing teams, this award goes to the team that makes the performance champions most nervous. As far as this team is concerned, "The Next Best Team" is not a label---it's a prediction.
Performance Award 1st Place: Often in life, success is only measured by a single number... This award goes to the team whose overall package of robot design, programming, strategy, and teamwork helps them to achieve the competition goal of achieving more points than any other team.
Leadership Award: Many teams reach significant milestones of success thanks to their close relationship with a mentor and effective teamwork. This award goes to the mentor and team whose wisdom, guidance, patience, and commitment were most clearly evident throughout the Tournament, from the Pits to the Judging and Competition fields.
Volunteer Award: The phenomenal success of the FIRST LEGO League program is a reflection of the commitment and enthusiasm displayed by our Volunteers. FIRST has established an annual award intended to honor the dedication of one or more Volunteers in each region whose assistance and devotion has helped to change the lives of children for the future.
Judge's Award: Many high quality teams don't exactly fit the mold for an existing award, but nonetheless deserve. Some teams have a story that profoundly sets them apart in a unique way. Sometimes a given award is just too close to call... This award gives the Judges the freedom to recognize the most remarkable team for which a standard award does not exist.
Director's Award: The other awards are won by teams who are the best in a particular award category, but this most prestigious award goes to the team who, in the big picture, is the strongest in all of the categories combined. The Director's Award winner is the total package---the embodiment of the FIRST LEGO League vision.
